Engine code

The engine code is the identifier a manufacturer assigns to a specific engine — architecture, fuel system, emissions standard, output. Two vehicles showing the same displacement and the same power output can carry two different engine codes, and therefore two incompatible sets of parts.

It is the criterion that most often separates near-identical part numbers. Oil filter, belt, injectors, turbo, throttle body: on these families, catalogue selection almost always runs through the engine code, never through the displacement printed on the registration document.

It is read from a label or stamping on the engine block, from the vehicle's service records, and indirectly from the registration document through the type-variant-version field. In the workshop, the stamping on the block remains the source that does not lie.

A photographed engine code beats a dictated one: the characters are often bold, grimy and easy to confuse. It is a textbook case of the principle set out in our guide on finding a part number from a photo — frame tightly on the text rather than describe it.

The trap

Confusing engine code with displacement. "2.0 TDI" is not an engine code: it is a commercial family that sometimes covers a dozen genuinely different engines, each with its own part numbers.

Is the engine code on the registration document?

Not directly in France. The certificate carries the type-variant-version and energy characteristics, which allow the engine to be traced. The stamping on the block remains the direct reading.

Do two vehicles with the same power output share an engine code?

No. The same output can come from two distinct engines, including within one range and one model year. Power output is not a part-selection criterion.
