An OBD fault code (DTC, Diagnostic Trouble Code) is the identifier a vehicle control unit records when a measurement falls outside expected tolerances. It describes an observed electronic symptom — a circuit, a value range, an inconsistency — not the cause and not the part to replace.

This is the most frequent confusion when a code reaches the counter. A code naming a sensor means the control unit is not getting what it expects from that sensor: it may be the sensor, but equally a corroded connector, a broken harness, a leak, or the physical quantity genuinely being out of range.
A code is therefore a diagnostic entry point, not a parts order. Selling the part named in the code label means accepting a return every other time: the part is fine, the symptom returns, and so does the workshop.
What it genuinely brings is useful identification context: it points at a system and a part family, which helps when the initial request is vague. Combined with the identified vehicle and a photo of the actual fitment, it narrows candidates efficiently.
The trap
Reading a code as a part number. "Sensor X circuit fault" is not an order for sensor X — it states a symptom of which that sensor is only one possible cause.
